Bottle 03:03
Hey, you got yourself a haircut, can see you standing at the bar I'm a bit late again but you got here some time earlier / I walk in the pool room, you're standing by the table I walk through the tables and join you where you're standing at the bar / You're playing with a man, I get kind of jealous So our jackets are just touching and I kind of lean against your shoulder / I fight it and I move on You say kind of gently not to stand so close, you're trying to make a move on a girl / Again you seem quite child-like which I simply adore Ask me for some money so you can entertain her / But cork those feelings Billy and love her from afar I say okay I'll back off, it's not like I've got a hold on you Now I'm standing at the bar and you're standing slightly over there / I move on Our love, our love ain't something you can drink Like you can at the bar with a pint of lager in the pub Our love, our love ain't something we can just drink Got to bottle it, bottle it up After a while I leave but just kind of walk about / I maintain my silence The streets at night then lay down on the tarmac of a carpark / I flirt with other girls Don't move much just lie there in the dark / I block out all that surrounds me And I don't blame you at all for trying to break my heart / I keep you out of my world. I move on. Our love, our love ain't something you can drink Like you can at the bar with a pint of bitter in the pub Our love, our love ain't something we can just drink Got to bottle it, bottle it up And I'm bottling it, ain't I

Your frame is as slender as it gets You sneak and you creep like a thief And you're stealing my heart away You're stealing my heart away I never thought that this would happen to me But it has and I can't stop it But I empathise with him And I wanna be him But I could never be him And age ain't nothing but a number And beauty's skin deep And you're always tanned And in the ideal world nobody would care But everybody cares, everybody cares And once again I don't know what to do Once again I don't know where to go No I don't know where to go No I don't know what to do What do I do now?

First met you You were drunk and stoned But your music Was from another world If I could save you From your black moods And your torn apart heart Then I would Because I want you Like Venus wanted Mars Like matter loves a vacuum With the lack of planning of a falling star

Liquid 03:15
So bite my lips off And tear my soul out For we were liquid We were liquid We became We became as one I don't want the best parts of you The part that goes down to the sea I want every atom of you I want you to consume me I'll protect you I'll deflect you I'll be your stable Your voice and cradle I don't want the best parts of you The part that goes down to the sea I want every atom of you I want you to consume me

Telling the time by the fall of the tropical fruit Up all night, night after night Hands of bridge as if your life depended on it Dealing cards still holding your cigarette Look at you! Look at you! You're climbing up the coconut tree Laughing like a wild thing Laughing like a wild thing In your girls' beads and your bare feet The Asian boys laid out like jewels Get hold of a living green-backed beetle Tie a thread to his leg for something to do Fly him high like a kite on rocket fuel Look at it! Look at it! A battering of green iridescent wings Crazy bug on a string Crazy bug on a string He'll do anything You flew up and up 'til you didn't come back Went beyond the clocks of the tropical night And in the early hours, still, I don't sleep For the buzzing of a boy in girls' beads and bare feet Look at you! Look at you! A battering of green iridescent wings Crazy bug on a string Crazy bug on a string She'd do anything

You say you've got no credit But where there's a will there's a way Haven't heard from you Since you left yesterday Half devil and half saviour Are you punishing me With nails and with fire So I feel how you feel? Went collecting sweet chestnuts To clear my head Kept texting you updates In an act of faith Half devil and half saviour Are you punishing me With nails and with fire Why don't you call me?

Grumpy One 02:11
For I am so young And you're just too old And I have got none And you've got a grumpy one Yeah you've got a grumpy one For I am so bored But I just can't move And I don't feel the same No I don't feel the same And then you come around And so do I For I am the grumpy one Yeah I am the grumpy one

Saint 02:47
You ask me “Say something nice” I say again you look like Christ But I don't say I'd drink your blood like wine and eat your body like bread When you go all holy it makes me kind of scared That I pray to you a hundred times a day in my head You say “I'm a Saint compared to you” I say “Yeah that's mainly true” But I don't say I kept your unwashed shirt like a forbidden relic I want something from you I don't know you can give When I cycle after you round town its a pilgrimage You look like a mercenary angel In your white dress and stubble And I don't say After all this time, you've made my heart whole It would help if I knew which side you were on When you hold my body feels like you're holding my soul

Mini-war with kin Fighting battles we all can't win Maybe this is wrong, I should move out Maybe this is wrong, I should move out It's your home (Like a dog) When is it mine? (Pissing on trees) I think the girl's (You wonder why) A little swine (It don't smell sweet) Maybe this is wrong, I should move out Maybe this is wrong, I should move out (Open arms and open heart Bury the cat in the yard) Maybe this is wrong, I should move out

Robin 01:37
Went to visit your flatmates Though I knew you were out Be with your debris And sit where you'd sat Go to the cafe Where you'd thrown titbits at the robin And later, in the tower You'd been the monarch with nothing But your kingdom still has walls Just like this walled garden And the robin ain't your guest She just eats what you were having

Magic 01:33
This love is magic; this love is nuts You have squeezed into my heart When I thought it had been irretrievably crushed Like when Nell reversed over the kettle Metal doesn't mend spontaneously The kettle's not been any good, since, for making tea How does blood mend? How can hearts mend? Hold you like a talisman, my magician, you crazy fool For what you have done doesn't seem possible This love is magic; this love is a gift You have squeezed into my heart When I thought it had been irretrievably crushed

It's a struggle not to gloat Whilst I'm painting you this coat I will make you I will make you A slinky Cheshire feline With this there is no beeline With this there is no exit We might as well accept it It's down down murky depths for us This boat is not gonna stay afloat To the translucent creatures that are unknown That's where this truce will find its flow With this there is no beeline With this there is no exit We might as well accept it Deep blue and green it surrounds me The green tangles it impounds me And it could make me It could make me A snarling grouchy canine With this there is no beeline With this there is no exit We might as well accept it

Witch Hunt 06:50
She's been burning for a thousand years The iron door of the furnace closed The sweets look incongruous, she don't get how they don't melt She loved once, but it didn't end well She don't recall how the woods got so impenetrable Now she gets to burn alone, she gets to burn alone And it hurts like hell Chased into the woods a thousand years ago Out of harm's way, but now along comes this boy With eyes like a deer. Why? Why did he come here? Lost in the woods, he saw the smoke from her candyhouse Didn't know better, came step by step like a sacrifice Drawn to the fire, drawn to the furnace The red hot door of her heart swings open wide She does it again! But she don't mind A world burning out of control is beautiful And the candyhouse burns The forest burns The fairytale burns And the boy burns Decent folks have had enough, look at the damage she's caused Track her down and bolt tight those iron doors Let her burn inside, leave her to burn alive And it hurts like hell

about

Before they got together, Billy and Bernadette exchanged songs. It was a code, a correspondence, an old-fashioned courtship. Sometimes by mp3, sometimes by a hard copy home-burnt cd dropped on the mat in the early hours. A relationship was out of the question. But the songs kept coming. No conversations about significant matters took place. Just the exchange of songs, back and forth, becoming more and more pressing. And in the end, however inconvenient and in appropriate, they got together anyway. These are some of those songs, re-recorded and with a few more instruments and noises. But the same songs, telling a love story.
